Final Council vote on inquest legal counsel for families

The full King County Council will vote on whether to ensure families of people killed in police custody in King County have access to legal counsel for the inquest process, where the circumstances of the death are investigated. Right now, the officers involved and the city/county that employs them have publicly-funded counsel, but the families are on their own, even though the public is relying on them to ask important questions.

Public testimony is important! On January 9, this ordinance passed out of committee with “no recommendation” because some details still needed to fine-tuned. At that hearing, the families who have faced this process alone spoke powerfully. On Jan 29, it’s important that community and legal bar supporters be heard in support.

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg and King County Executive Dow Constantine support this ordinance, which was introduced by Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Councilmember Rod Dembowski and Councilmember Dave Upthegrove.
