March for Science Lexington (RSVP Page)

The March for Science is a non-partisan, inclusive movement to advocate academic freedom and the ability to publish scientific findings without penalty or threat. We are here to use our voice to continue the pursuit of scientific investigation, discussion, and debate.

Minutes from 4/2/17 Lexington MfS Meeting
• Bank account – We now have $643 in the bank (after insurance payment, ad, and other small stuff). We should have a few more checks on the way. Need to raise more money!

• Status with insurance/city – Insurance received; forwarded to city. Accepted by city. Pending final approval.
• Marching Band was offered $100.
• Sponsor letters are ready. Some have been sent out. Email address corrected on them.
• We voted to spend up to $50 on Facebook advertising – Facebook ad ongoing until 4/22/17.
• Confirmed speakers:
-Derrick Graham (State Representative and educator) – Importance of science education
-Dr. Frank Ettensohn (Professor and Jefferson Science Fellow).. Kids in science and the need for a Natural History Museum
– Daniel Phelps (president of Kentucky Paleontological Society) – climate change, evolution, and the need to communicate science through outreach

• Bands – Trent will contact
• Sound system – Pending ($246 to rent biggest from Doo Wop. 6 speakers, 2 monitors, sound board). $100 for delivery http://www.doowop.com/suggested-pa-rental-packages
• Find sound engineer
• Shirts – Get from national. Not doing shirts.
• Next meeting – Eastside Library, Friday (4/7) 5pm-6pm
• Need to talk to business owners around courthouse plaza. Done
• We will rent 4 or so recycle bins from the city. Trent has contacted about this. $18
• Next meeting announce fundraising
• Maybe have a table of signs people could make
• Kid activities – Alex has list… contact her if need to add more. 9 confirmed.
• Tables – we voted to spend up to $100 on this. TWWB has offered 6 for free. Also may need chairs for those who can’t stand
• Porta potties – Got one estimate for $350 and $450 for 4. Need one that’s handicapped-accessible.
• Estimated schedule:
o 12:30 – last deliveries and close off Short Street?
o 1:00pm – Trent makes announcements
o 1:10pm – speakers
o 1:40pm – March until?
o ? until 5pm – activities, bands, socialize
• Where are we marching? Trent – contact police and insurance company
• Accessibility plans and ASL interpreter – Becky and Alex have this taken care of?
• Contingency plan – need to work on. KY Theater is not an option. Manchester Music Hall?
• Created parking map. Need map of where to march.
• Contact media – Trent will do next week

Minutes from 3/22/17 Lexington MfS Meeting:

• Bank account – We now have $556 in the bank (after insurance payment). We hopefully have a few more checks on the way
• Status with insurance/city – When I receive the insurance certificate, I will forward to the city. This should happen by Monday. As far as we know, all is moving smoothly now.
• Marching Band was offered $100.
• Sponsor letters are ready. Will add logos to them.
• We approved to spend up to $50 on Facebook advertising.
• Everyone is working on a list of speakers
• Bands – tabled until next meeting
• Shirts – tabled until next meeting
• Next meeting – we decided to have one more executive committee meeting before opening to the public. We created a Doodle Poll. Date/time/place pending.
• We will rent 4 or so recycle bins from the city (Trent)
• Kid activities – Becky and others are working on details
• Tables – we voted to spend up to $100 on this. TWW has offered 6 for free. Also may need chairs for those who can’t stand

Some were closed. We plan on connecting with more in the near future!

NEW UPDATE (3/15/17):

Insurance application submitted, city permits submitted, police contacted, scoped out area, in the process of selecting speakers, fundraising letter completed, kid activities being planned, The shutting down of Short Street confirmed… our first public meeting will likely be held in two weeks. Stay tuned!

UPDATE – 1st MEETING (3/5/17):

9 volunteers met at Cheddars in Lexington from 5pm until 7pm. We established a voting group and voted on/discussed the following topics:

– Where… unanimously decided the downtown courthouse location due to room
– When… 1pm to 5pm on April 22
– Will be a non-partisan group
– Will have 5 speakers. Each will speak 5 minutes.
– Will start with speakers, march, then come back for live music/socializing, etc.
– Will have a kids’ area
– Will notify area restaurants and create flyers
– Established committees for fundraising, activities, music, communications, etc
– Area science groups encouraged to sponsor!
